11 March 2018: CompassSport Cup Heat – The Result

We knew we were in a tough heat.  Not only were we up against the two main clubs in the South Central region (TVOC and SOC) but with the heat being staged in the South East, we were also competing against strong teams from their large clubs – HH, SO, SN and SLOW.  As Club Captain Martin Wilson has commented this evening: “I confess to still feeling somewhat stunned by our fantastic result today.”  Not only did we do much better than both TVOC and SOC but we also overtook HH to finish 4th overall and not far behind rivals SN.  Although we had winners in both the Men Open (Pavel Prochazka) and Women Open (Kezia Jukes), it was the strength across the different classes that really saw us achieve such a good result.  Martin was particularly pleased and grateful for the support we got from the St Andrew’s School juniors.  In several cases they had been asked to ‘run up’ and, despite taking long times, their determination enabled them to score well for the club in classes where other clubs failed to enter competitors.  Martin’s understanding of the rules of the competition and his tactical selection of courses for our team members certainly adds to our overall score.  Next year the heat will be in the New Forest and there are likely to be fewer teams from the South East.  Martin is already looking ahead: “We were missing several stalwarts this year. If we can maintain the present team for next year and restore the absentees, we could perform well.”  In conclusion, he stated: “What a great bunch to race with!”  Well done everyone.
