Uphill struggles at Croeso

A strong contingent of 11 BKO members took part in Croeso 2012, based at Aberystwyth in mid-Wales. Some members tackled all six days, some did fewer days. The event had four Long days, all on steep and rough open moorland, one Middle Distance – the only day to use trees at all – and one Urban race round the campus of Aberystwyth University, a notable first for a UK six-day event.

Unsurprisingly, the best BKO scores came on the Middle and Urban days, steep rough rocky moorland perhaps not being our club speciality. With four events to count from six, the following performances were gained by participants:

Full-timers:

                                        Class                          Overall Position                Best Run

Andrew Graham                   M55L                                   53th                          20th

Ken Ricketts                       M55L                                   78th                          69th

Sue Wilkes                         W55S                                   19th                          14th

Alain Wilkes                        M60S                                   20th                          17th

Martin Wilson                      M65L                                   2nd                            1st

Richard Rae                        M65L                                   28th                          12th

Part-Timers:

Doug Greenwood                 M35S                                                                    9th

Annika Hermik                    W40S                                                                   17th

David Jukes                        M60L                                                                    10th

In addition, Sue Parker and partner Brian Sewell competed on the Light Green course for five days. With almost 70 entries of a variety of age groups, this course was very competitive and technically difficult. This was Sue and Brian’s first foray into ‘northern’ terrain, but they achieved excellent best runs of 12th and 32nd respectively. Rumour has it they may now be considering procuring proper O shoes with studs!

Congratulations to everyone on their fine efforts, with Andrew’s 20thand Martin’s 1st in the Middle event and David’s excellent 10th in the Urban event being the pick of the BKO performances.  But perhaps the strongest performance of all came from the BKO team at the pub quiz - 10th overall out of 30+ teams: not bad, eh?!

Overall, the event proved a major success, and the format worked well, helped by glorious weather throughout. Results, Routegadget etc can be found at http://www.croesomultiday.org.uk.
