Regional Event (Swinley East) 26-Oct-24 - Results

We hope everyone had a good run out and found challenges on what is a relatively limited area.  The ever changing landscape and inaccessible areas of a working forest made creating suitable courses quite difficult, which, alongside our relative lack of planning experience and never ending rain meant that both we and our controller(s) had plenty of correspondence and many trips into the forest before everyone was happy.

We got there in the end though, and the overall feedback seemed positive.  Certainly everyone looked suitably tired and dishevelled on their return, and that seems like a good trip out to me.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, without whom events cannot take place, and thanks to all who took part. We look forward to seeing you at our next BKO event on 7th December which is night orienteering at Star Posts (great fun and not to be missed! )

My first night event controlling experience, and I enjoyed it. Thank you to Bo and the BKO team for giving their time during the holiday season to hold this hastily rescheduled event. Not a breath of wind this week, and a lovely evening to be out in the woods.

Mark's courses were largely unchanged from their very first iteration. The same could not be said of the forest which was being thinned and felled before our eyes in the weeks leading up to the event. Simon updated the map to reflect the most significant changes and BML did a last minute reprint - preferable to a load of notes on maps in the start lanes.

We were very conscious of avoiding annoying bingo controls in the dark, but with bracken lying low, many trees removed from the forest, and the use of shiny new kites with reflective stripes, some controls were far more visible than intended. Sorry if it felt too easy for some.

Congratulations to all the 2024 (just in time!) southern night champions, and I hope everyone enjoyed their evening out.

Congratulations to the 2024 Southern Nights Champions! You've earned the bragging rights for an entire year and have a trophy to display proudly. Please engrave the trophy with your name. For those winners who had to leave before the prize ceremony, I will be in touch shortly to arrange a handover of the trophy.

This year's event was not without challenges to organise. We found out rather late that there were going be to extensive forest operations at Star Posts which made the course planning and mapping extra challenging. Storm Darragh threw a final wrench in our original plans, leading to the cancellation the day before the event was due to go ahead. It quickly became clear that there would not be a perfect new date for the event due to clashes with other events and Christmas holidays. But I am pleased we managed to reschedule, and we were happy to welcome over 50 new entries who entered after the initial event date. Sadly, we also lost a similar number of entries who had to withdraw due to the date change clashing with Christmas plans.

A special thank you goes out to our Planner (Mark), Controller (Paul), and Mapper (Simon). Excellent work despite the changes and challenges caused by ongoing forestry work and updated event date.
I am also thankful to the club volunteers who stepped up on the day of the event. As a small club, we rely heavily on the willingness of members to lend a hand, and once again, you did not disappoint. The assembly’s proximity to the start and finish, along with convenient parking in car park, allowed us to run smoothly with just a few helpers.

An extra thank you goes to Mark Saunders from TVOC (M35 champion) who volunteered to be one of the control collectors. Mark lost his map halfway during the collection run (easily done when dark and focusing on collecting and bagging up kites, stakes and SI units). Made his way back to assembly (with no map!), fuelled up on a mince pie, collected a new map and went out again to collect the remaining controls on his route.

Thank you to all participants for your enthusiasm, returning on time and injury free from your run. Only one lost item was found. An aluminium thermos flask, branded contigo. Contact organiser on events@bko.org.uk to arrange return.

Looking ahead, we welcome you all to Berkshire Orienteers' next event which is our biggest of the year: the Concorde Chase weekend. Taking place on January 25-26. We have two events using fantastic orienteering areas lined up. A Regional urban event at Wildridings/Great Holland in Bracknell followed by a National forest event at Cold Ash, the site of the 2023 British Championships. RaceSignUp entries open very soon.

Regional Event (Great Hollands) 25-Jan-25 - Results

Thank you to everyone who participated at our event today, it was great to get positive feedback on the challenging courses and sunny weather. Thanks as ever to the BKO team of volunteers who did a great job. Thanks also to Fujitsu for the car parking area and Bracknell Forest Council for permission to run in this excellent urban orienteering area.

An outstanding event for many reasons but from the organisers point of view the wonderful efforts of the tractor drivers and their helpers plus the many competitors who literally mucked in to release the cars from the car parking field will be the abiding memory. Thank you so much to everyone who took part.

Concorde Chase is BKO’s main event of the year and combined with the Saturday urban makes a great orienteering weekend. A lot of time had been taken by our planner, Richard, to create some excellent courses in this lovely forest area. Terry, our controller, had also checked progress carefully and kept us looking at the details.

Although we've successfully used this carpark field for both JK and BOC Long Champs in the past, this winter has proved wetter than previous years. We hired tracking for the field entrance expecting this to be sufficient for our needs The weather on Saturday was dry and sunny and the forecast for Sunday was not cold but with rain later. We decided to go ahead, and the event itself went very well thanks to all our helpers on the day. Unfortunately, the heavy rain exacerbated the muddy conditions in the field so, although earlier competitors exited successfully, it soon became apparent that we had major problems. Our regular 4x4s were finding conditions too difficult so the local estate manager produced 4 tractors. Thanks to them everyone got rescued even though it took a long time. We apologise for the long waits that some of you had, and we are very grateful that so many people waited so patiently in such awful conditions. The helpfulness of people who pushed cars out, encouraged others and kept cheerful showed orienteering at its best. Also thank you to the many people who got in touch afterwards expressing their thanks for the event.

On behalf of all competitors, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to Jane and Fiona and the BKO team, the tractor team and those competitors who joined in to help get every vehicle out of the increasingly muddy assembly field. The last time I helped with an event on Cold Ash was as Joint Coordinator of the 2019 JK. That was the one where our biggest concerns were dehydration, heat-stoke and sunburn!

Despite some initial concerns when I became aware of media interest, I was grateful that the coverage focused on the positive aspects of the situation, particularly the willingness of the local farmers to turn out and use their skills with good humour to get every vehicle out of the field. It was heartening to see the camaraderie, high spirits, and mutual support of all those involved.

BKO took on a lot to offer you a weekend of orienteering. They were supported by a few helpers from other clubs, which I sense they appreciated.

Richard’s courses seemed to fully meet expectations on this varied and quality area. I only heard positive comments from finishers. The major control checking took place in the weeks leading up to the event when conditions were cold and firm underfoot due to frost and snow. On the day, tracks, paths and the forest generally were noticeably “softer”.

I was a little concerned about the Yellow course used by younger age classes as this included some legs that used ditches and a taped section where there was a gap in the path network. In other regions, a lack of path network and use of non-path linear features is more common. The juniors appear to have coped well with this.

A huge “Well done and thank you” to the BKO team for providing a memorable event and congratulations to the new SCOA Champions.

Event Photos: As well as producing muddy tracks, the dull wet weather made photography difficult resulting in many blurred photos. However, some are available in a Flickr album - see: https://www.flickr.com/.../1036.../albums/72177720323410285/
